Patient Faith

There is a story in the bible in Mark 5 starting in verse 21 that says:

“Jesus got into the boat again and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd gathered around him on the shore. Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was Jairus, arrived. When he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet, pleading fervently with him. “My little daughter is dying,” he said. “Please come and lay your hands on her; heal her so she can live.” Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around him. A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding. She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the years she had spent everything she had to pay them, but she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse. She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition. Jesus realized at once that healing power had gone out from him, so he turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my robe?” His disciples said to him, “Look at this crowd pressing around you. How can you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” But he kept on looking around to see who had done it. Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realization of what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front of him and told him what she had done. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace. Your suffering is over.” While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the home of Jairus, the leader of the synagogue. They told him, “Your daughter is dead. There’s no use troubling the Teacher now.” But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.””

Can you imagine what it was like for Jairus?!? Here he needed a miracle for his little girl. She needed a healing or she was going to die. Finally! Jairus was able to reach just the man, Jesus, who can bring healing to his daughter, and Jesus agreed to follow him to his house to see his daughter. BUT THEN…this woman touches Jesus’ clothes and stops everything. If Jairus had a watch back then, I’m sure he would have been keeping time since time was critical for his little girl. As a parent, I fight tooth and nail for my kids. We will do just about anything for them to be sure that our kids are healthy and safe, and heaven help you if you get in the way. Yet, Jairus waited patiently until Jesus was done speaking with the woman. Before Jesus is done, a message comes from Jairus’ home stating that it was too late. How crushing that must have felt. He went through all of this trouble knowing that if only Jesus can make it on time, Jesus could heal his daughter and could live. He had the Faith to believe for this miracle. Now that his little girl is gone, “what’s the point”. That’s when Jesus knowing what is going on says, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.” Wait, what? It’s too late. We didn’t make it on time. And now Jesus says “HAVE FAITH”. Of course we read on to find out that Jesus raises Jairus’ daughter from the dead. Superseding Jairus’ expectation!!

Think about it. Have there been any times when you needed a miracle, and you’re praying and doing all that you can to believe that Jesus will answer your need? But all you hear is crickets. Nothing…not an indication of any kind that Jesus will answer your prayer. Yet, Jesus tells Jairus in Mark 5:36, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”

Sometimes we need PATIENT FAITH to keep believing for the miracle until otherwise told. Faith means to have complete trust or confidence in someone/something. We always want an answer immediately, but Jesus is asking us to have Faith. Trust him to do what is best for us whether we can see it or not, even as we are watching others receive their miracle and answered prayers. Think about Jairus and the final answer Jesus gave him. His daughter was raised from death to life, and his story is continues to being told thousands of years later. We may think we know what is best for us, but God writes the story of our life if we let Him. All we have to due is have a Patient Faith and know that he loves us enough to answer our prayers one way or another and in the timeframe He deems adequate.
